A new feature at Sevenoaks Tennis Club, the Leap-Frog Ladder System allows club members to both engage in light-hearted competition when playing each other, and monitor their own improvement as a player, by maintaining a record of their wins and losses against other members, should they wish to do so. The rules of the system are very simple, and are outlined below:

1. Each match is best of three sets, with a champions tie-break deciding the final set if the match is at 1 set all.
2. If the winner is of higher rank on the ladder than their opponent, they receive 20 points to add to their current total.
3. If the winner is of lower rank on the ladder than their opponent, their previous points total is replaced with that of their opponent, plus 20 points, thus leap-frogging them up the ladder.
4. The loser receives 1 point for every game that they won during the match.
5. If a match is defaulted mid-way through, the victor may add extra games to his score to record a 2 set victory (i.e. if the game was stopped with the victor leading 3-2 in the first set, he/she may add 3+6 games on to make a 6-2, 6-0 victory).

The Leap-frog system is reliable for several reasons. Firstly, although a strong player may rise to the top of the rankings very quickly, he/she must continue to play matches or his/her ranking will fall again over time. Secondly, the loser is rewarded on performance rather than number of matches played, preventing certain players from maintaining a high position by just playing many matches regardless of the result.
